This is a big update to the way you research, plan, and write in Scribeist. Your sources, notes, conversations, and drafts can now work more closely together, with clearer ways to check where an answer came from and decide what belongs in your writing.

A Home for Non-fiction Books

When creating a Book workspace, you can now choose Fiction or Non-fiction.

Non-fiction workspaces bring your manuscript, planning, research, and references together. Citation and reference tools are available from the start.

Mythos can also help you keep track of the people, places, organizations, concepts, and events in your subject. This is just the start of non-fiction workspaces, there's more to come!

Research is not limited to non-fiction. You can still use sources, notes, and research search in other workspace types, and turn on citation tools in Workspace Settings when you need them.

A More Complete Research Library

Research now gives source material and your own notes clearer places to live.

Keep imported sources and standalone notes together in a searchable library.
Expand a source to see its attached notes without leaving the library.
Open a source with its notes, citation options, and publication details alongside it.
Edit details such as the author, publication date, publisher, journal, pages, and web address.
Search, sort, filter, and select multiple library items.
When deleting a source, choose whether to delete its attached notes or keep them as standalone notes.

You can write notes while reading a source or ask AI to create notes from its text.

More Ways to Bring In Research

You can now add research through DOIs, Zotero, and reference files, as well as document uploads.

Paste one or more DOIs to import publication details and an abstract when one is available.
Connect Zotero and import items from a library or a chosen collection.
Import reference lists in BibTeX, RIS, or CSL JSON format.
Review imported source details and see which citation information is missing.

A DOI or reference record does not necessarily include the full article.

Citations and References While You Write (Beta)

You can now cite sources directly in the editor and build a reference list alongside your draft.

Search your research library from the citation picker.
Insert an in-text citation, with a page reference when needed.
Add a source to your references without inserting an in-text citation.
Write or paste a manual reference when you need one.
Change the citation style for a document and update its linked citations and references together.

There are 15 citation styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago author–date, Harvard, Vancouver, IEEE, and several journal-specific styles.

Citation and reference formatting is also carried into supported document exports.

AI Answers You Can Check

Workspace and research search now make it easier to follow an answer back to your writing or evidence.

Answers can include numbered source links.
A Sources section below the answer lists the sources cited in that response.
Expand a supporting quote when one is included to see the evidence behind a source link.
Workspace source links open the document itself.
Research links open the relevant source or note, with the supporting text highlighted when a matching passage is available.
Research citations can be copied or inserted into your writing when citation tools are enabled.

Research is still available through Chat's Add menu when you want to focus a conversation on particular material.

Simpler Search Choices in Chat

The Search menu now has separate choices for Search workspace, Search research, and, in book workspaces, Search Mythos.

Search starts off in new chats. Turn on the areas you want to use, or leave search off for a normal conversation about writing.

AI Can Now Help You Create!

Creating Canvases:

Create a canvas from a conversation or material you have provided.
Add and edit cards and connections on a canvas.
Use existing Mythos entries as canvas cards in book workspaces.
Create and update Mythos entries and relationships in book workspaces.
Open a newly created canvas directly from its link in Chat.
Undo supported AI canvas changes from the conversation.

For example, you could ask for a canvas connecting the characters involved in a mystery, or turn a set of notes into a visual outline.

Creating Mythos Entities:

Simply ask the AI to create any type of Mythos entity
Give the AI any amount of information you want included
Ask AI to edit existing Mythos Entities
AI will not delete entities

Currently local models to do support AI creation.

Suggested Edits, With the Final Say Left to You

Chat can now suggest text changes in your current document when you enable Suggest edits from the Edits control.

The proposed changes appear in the editor for review. You can accept or reject individual changes, or accept or reject all remaining suggestions from Chat.

Rejecting the remaining suggestions does not undo changes you have already accepted.

This first version focuses on text changes, not rearranging whole documents or rebuilding complex layouts.

Better Context and a Calmer Chat

Full text and AI summary remain separate choices.

There is also an optional preference to automatically add the current document's full text when starting a new chat. It is off by default.

The conversation itself has been cleaned up:

Brief progress messages show actions such as searching, reading, or creating a canvas while they happen.
Tables and other Markdown formatting display in the sidebar chat.
Sent attachments appear in a compact expandable list.
Long-chat preparation can be cancelled along with the request.
When a chat becomes too long it will be compacted down to continue use.

Find Mythos Entries During Import

Book imports can now look for Mythos entries in the documents you bring in.

Choose Find Mythos entries with AI to identify characters or people, places, organizations, concepts, items, and events. You can review and edit the suggestions, select what to add, or return to the review later.

The review also supports timeline events, including their dates and related details. Existing Mythos matches are identified to help avoid adding the same entry again.

Quick export menus let you download a document or your main writing without opening the full formatting screen first. Choose Word, EPUB, Markdown, HTML, or plain text, with Google Drive and Notion destinations available when connected.

Canvases can also be downloaded as a JSON Canvas (.canvas) for use in compatible canvas apps.

Account settings, workspace settings, integrations, and billing now share a more consistent settings window.
Refreshed icons, menus, and controls across the workspace.
Supported free OpenRouter models are now included in the model choices for users with their own connection.
Improved table controls for adding rows and columns.
Improved typing after links, so following text does not unintentionally remain part of the link.
Added Greek as a content language.
Improved Notion page importing and page hierarchy handling.
