What is the toolbar?
The editor toolbar provides quick access to formatting options without needing to use markdown. There are two toolbars: the top toolbar and the text selection toolbar.
Top toolbar
The top toolbar appears above your document and contains formatting options for headings, fonts, text styles, highlights, lists, alignment, links, images, citations, and AI actions.
Toggle visibility: Go to Workspace Settings → Toggle "Show Top Toolbar" on or off
When hidden, you can still format using markdown or the text selection toolbar.
Text selection toolbar
When you highlight text, a floating toolbar appears directly above your selection.
What's included:
- Text style and font family
- Text formatting (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, and highlights)
- Create links
- AI tools (rewrite, expand, shorten, custom prompts)
Always visible: This toolbar cannot be hidden—it's designed for quick formatting and AI assistance.
AI text tools
Select any text to access AI tools in the selection toolbar.
Available AI actions:
- Rewrite - Rewrite the selected text in a different way
- Expand - Add more detail and depth to the text
- Shorten - Condense the text while keeping the meaning
- Ask Chat - Give AI specific instructions for how to modify the text
AI changes appear in the right sidebar, and you can accept/insert, reject, or regenerate them.

Formatting options
All formatting options are available through both toolbars:
- Font family - Apply a font to selected text or return it to the workspace default
- Text styles - Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code, and highlights
- Headings - H1 through H6
- Lists - Bulleted, numbered, and task lists
- Alignment - Left, center, right, justify
- Block elements - Quotes, code blocks, horizontal rules
- Insert - Links, images, tables, footnotes, and a table of contents
- Research - Insert citations when citation tools are enabled
Font family
Select text, open the font menu, and choose a typeface to format only that selection. If nothing is selected, the chosen font applies to text you type next. Choose the item marked Default to remove the inline font and return to the workspace typeface.
The workspace typeface remains the default for unformatted text and can be chosen when creating a workspace.
Footnotes
Type /footnote and choose Footnote from the slash-command menu. Enter the note in the popover beside its numbered reference. Footnotes renumber automatically when references are added or removed.
