What are AI credits?
AI credits are used whenever you interact with Scribeist's AI features — whether you're generating content, researching topics, or using AI writing tools.
If you are on a BYOK plan, Scribeist uses your OpenRouter API key instead of deducting Scribeist AI credits for supported AI requests.
Depending on your OpenRouter setup, those requests may use OpenRouter billing, OpenRouter credits, or provider keys you have configured inside OpenRouter.

Credits by plan
Each plan includes a monthly AI credit allowance:

Your monthly credits renew automatically at the start of each billing cycle.
BYOK plan variants do not include a monthly AI credit allowance because supported AI requests are routed through your OpenRouter key instead.
How far do credits go?
For most writers, Hobby provides more than enough AI usage for regular drafting, editing, brainstorming, and research. Pro is designed for higher-volume and more intensive workflows.
Credit usage varies depending on prompt length, response size, and the specific AI feature being used.
Credits are consumed when using:
- AI writing assistance (rewrites, expansions, suggestions)
- Research and web scraping
- Content generation
- Chat with AI
- Mythos AI classification
Mythos and credits
Mythos entity tracking itself is part of the Novel workspace experience, but the AI-powered Mythos classification layer can consume credits when it runs.
If you do not want Mythos AI to use credits in a workspace, you can turn Mythos AI off in Workspace Settings → AI.

Purchasing additional credits
You can purchase credit bundles of 500 credits for a one-time fee.
How purchased credits work:
- Available only to Hobby and Pro subscribers
- Used after your monthly recurring credits run out
- Never expire — they remain in your account indefinitely
- If you downgrade to Free, purchased credits are locked until you resubscribe

Credit refunds
Purchased credit bundles can be refunded if unused:
- Within 14 days: Contact us at [email protected] for a refund
- After 14 days: Reach out to us and we’ll review your request on a case-by-case basis
