Footnotes

Add, edit, remove, and export numbered notes from a document.

Add a footnote

Place the cursor where the reference should appear, type /footnote, and select Footnote from the slash-command menu. Scribeist inserts a numbered reference and opens a small editor for the note.

Footnote text supports basic rich-text formatting and links. Press Escape or click outside the popover to return to the document.

Edit or remove a footnote

Select a numbered footnote reference to reopen its editor. Use the trash button in the popover to remove it.

References are numbered from their order in the document. When you insert or remove a footnote, later references update automatically.

Export footnotes

Scribeist preserves footnotes according to the destination format:

  • Word documents use native Word footnotes.
  • EPUB and HTML include linked notes with return links.
  • Markdown uses footnote references and definitions.
  • Plain text includes numbered references and a Footnotes section.

Check the formatting preview before exporting when page layout or note placement matters.
