What is the Book workspace?

The Book workspace is designed for long-form projects. During creation, choose Fiction or Non-fiction so Scribeist can adapt its terminology and starting tools.

Fiction books emphasize characters, world-building, story events, and manuscript continuity. Non-fiction books bring manuscripts, planning, research, references, people, places, organizations, concepts, and factual events together.

Unique features

Mythos - Character & World Tracking

Track characters, locations, organizations, lore, items, and events throughout your story.

Key capabilities:

  • Track detailed entity information (names, relationships, traits)
  • See where entities appear in your manuscript
  • Color-code entities for quick visual reference
  • Create parent/child relationships (e.g., Kingdom → Cities → Characters)
  • Timeline tracking for character arcs and plot progression
  • Choose which profile fields AI may receive with AI Visibility

Planning Templates

Pre-built story structure templates based on popular frameworks.

Start an editable planning document from a guided story structure, diagram, or blank note. Fill in the prompts, rewrite the structure, or add the plan to AI Chat like any other document.

Color-Coded Entity Highlighting

See where characters, locations, and other entities appear in your manuscript.

How it works:

  • Assign colors to entities in Mythos
  • Entities appear highlighted throughout your manuscript
  • Click highlights to view entity details
  • Parent entities pass colors to children (e.g., all Avengers appear in blue)

AI for long-form writing

AI behavior and available context adapt to the kind of book you selected.

Features:

  • Prose-focused suggestions for fiction, or research-focused help for non-fiction
  • Add selected Mythos entities—or all entities of a type—to AI Chat
  • AI receives only profile fields allowed by each entity's AI Visibility settings
  • Add manuscript documents, folders, or the full manuscript when exact story context is needed
  • Search your manuscript, planning documents, and research when needed
  • Creative suggestions for plot and character development

Reading Mode

Read the complete manuscript in document order without opening chapters one at a time. Reading mode supports a continuous layout and a paginated book preview. Open it from the Modes menu in the workspace top bar, and configure its layout under Workspace Settings → Modes.

Board tabs

Book workspaces include these main board tabs:

  • Manuscript - Your main writing area (chapters, scenes, acts)
  • Planning - Story structure, outlines, and Planning Templates
  • Research - Background research and reference materials
  • Mythos - Characters and world entities for fiction, or people, places, organizations, concepts, objects, and factual events for non-fiction
  • Timeline - Dated events and chronology

The Manuscript, Planning, and Research tabs can contain documents, folders, and canvases. Mythos and Timeline use their own dedicated views.
